I am interested in identifying novel developmental functions of genes or non-coding RNAs implicated in autism by using both in vitro and in vivo strategies and applying these findings to understand the common pathways involved in autism spectrum condition.
I used an in utero electroporation strategy to examine the development of callosal axons in mouse somatosensory cortex and found that neuronal activity is required for callosal axons to cross the midline of the brain and form specific branching patterns in the contralateral cortex. I also examined the developmental role of the retromer protein VPS35 (a recently identified neurodegenerative risk factor) in mouse hippocampal CA1 neurons in vivo.
